in hawaii where the president is spending the christmas holiday. brianna, the president maybe a little too optimistic that a deal can be reached? aloha, by the way. >> he did say last night that he is a hopeless optimist that something can get done, but what we know, it's not going to be that big package, obviously of deficit reduction as well as dealing with these tax hikes that are set to kick in. that's not what's going to be happening, instead, he's pressing for something smaller just to a deal with stopping those tax hikes from kicking in for americans making $250,000 per year or less. and also trying to make sure that unemployment benefits are extended. listen to what president obama said last night and also listen to what some of the house republican resistance from speaker boehner to his sort of short-term plan here. >> in the next few days, i've asked leaders of congress to work towards a package that prevents a tax hike on middle class americans, protects unemployment insurance for 2 million americans, and lays the groundwork for further work on both growth and deficit reduction.

article and we want to show you -- according to one article, the nominee has flown back from hawaii with the president on air force one. most of the papers are filled with articles about the fiscal cliff issue. joining us now is merideth shiner of cq roll call. ms. shiner. guest: ms. shiner seem so formal. we're having a recession in between christmas and new year's. that has not happened since the 1970's. maybe we should play disco or maybe they should just finished their work so they can stop making terrible jokes. i think you are a point to see some push in the next few days to try to get some sort of small deal done. you have to remember and your viewers will notice, because they are fans of the legislative process, anything that gets done, it has to get done very quickly in order for there to be time before new year's for it to be approved and signed into law. today's the 27th. the senate comes back in session today, the house is in pro-forma so it probably will not do any work. you only have a few days left for lawmakers to make a deal -- ink a deal. the president took off las

. the question is, who? the president met with senate majority leader harry reid before going to hawaii and his offer was to extend the tax cuts for incomes under $250,000, extend unemployment insurance benefits, and the lady across -- and then delay the across the board automatic cuts that are supposed to start january 1. that seems to be a non starter with republicans. it's hard to see where we go from here. host: have they been talking over the christmas break at all? also, one has been the role of -- what has been the role of senator mitch mcconnell? guest: the line that comes from the speakers office all the time is the line of communication remain open. i don't know how much talking they did as the president was in hawaii spending time with his family and the speaker was back home in ohio, i believe. i don't know that for sure. everyone was doing their family time and not really working that significantly on something. i think there was probably some minimal conversation, but not a lot. as for the senate minority leader mitch mcconnell, i think that is a good one. a lot has been made in

becoming greece. >> today, despite the president being in hawaii, the fiscal cliff is still on the agenda. kristen welker is with the president in honolulu. good day to you, kristen. what are you hearing there? >> reporter: alex, good morning to you. white house officials say this is very much a working vacation, no word if president obama has actually spoke on the congressional leaders at this point. i can tell you that conversations are going on at the staff level. but the reality is that the hard work, the final touches probably won't be put on these bills or this bill, rather, that they're hoping to get until lawmakers, the president, return to washington. and of course that won't happen until after the christmas holiday. this has a lot of people worried, alex, because as you say there's not a lot of time left to get a deal done. president obama, house speaker john boehner, were very close to getting a deal. president obama had given a little on entitlement reform, house speaker john boehner had given a lit until terms of agreeing to increase taxes. but they just couldn't get to the f

both be blamed for. that's why we have the president flying back from hawaii. that's why we have republicans coming in on sunday even though neither side expects it to change any. the great line in this story, the talking bint it they have is the lines of communication remain open, but all are reporting that the lines of communication may remain open but they're not saying anything. they're negotiating out loud. it's like when you send an e-mail and put your boss on it or copy the whole office. you're not trying to persuade but make your point. >> i'll never do that. richard wolf, are you still awake down there. >> i am. i go to starbucks. >> let me ask you this unearned sense of optimism that seeps out between talk of going over the cliff. we'll go over the cliff but get a deal done within the next two weeks after january 1st. why am i thinking maybe they won't get a deal done? >> right. why? because you watched these idiots try to come up with a deal sore. they didn't have an agreement with the recovery act and republicans didn't want to step up then. we're talking about two se
